Morning of the 4th of July
July 5, 2016
Sunlight surgesbetweenthetreesand pours out into the garden turning the greens into verdant blazing while birds zig zag through the shafts of light. The Fourth of July is radiant and alive as we gaze out the windows and delight in so much beauty. Mother for the most part slept well and now listens to music as she drinks her coffee and waits while I write this before we go on our morning drive. We laughed while she took her pills at breakfast. Now she has to be coaxed into taking them and so I feed them one at a time into her mouth. Both hands are now back to working well but she does not know how to use them and often has to have the food placed into her mouth. The forgetting of how to do simple tasks has made for a new normal of routine. We spend longer on meals and restroom breaks. In a time of high energy, when the sun is out and days are long, we seem to be slower in things and I am trying not to rush her. She smiles a lot but now the smiles are covers that hide her forgetfulness and not understanding. We rock along gently down the stream moving at a walking pace and trying to enjoy the world as we go by. It seems we never get anywhere and maybe that is what we need now.
Paintings are developing quickly now. The big pond is growing more complex and simple at the same time. The feeling of fragmentation is becoming more unified. Colors and shapes dance with each other in a slow waltz rather than a spirited rhythm. The beauty that knits each part with the other is satisfying. I have started several new works with a burst of energy that has overtaken me in the last few weeks. It feels great to work again in the way I used to but different. Now I do short sprints rather than long races. My time is limited so I try to push as much as I can, and use other reflective times to think where the work needs to go. Mother naps more in the afternoon and so that is my time to work while keeping an eye on her from the other room. The seascape is emerging as well as the other works. The ocean has a silver and gold sea over the darker blue green water. The surface shimmers and the hidden patterns of waves ungulate the surface. The abstract of leaves and oranges is moving forward and the bones of the design can be seen. The other works are doing well, too.
Hope you are enjoying these sun rich days and making the most of them so you will have memories to carry you through the cool dark winter. That you are warmed both in heart and mind. That you are tasting the summer fruit that floods the markets and bushes. That you enjoy the slow as well as the fast and can find balance in both. That you are not alone but in a community of love and care.
