Sunlight and the Chill of Morning
February 9, 2016
Sunlight fills the house with golden light and the last chill of morning is baked away by the fire burning brightly in the stove. Mother sits drinking coffee and looking at the yard in its intense green coat. The browns and oranges of yesterday are changed to the velvet greens of new growth. Even the fish pond is awake with the reflections of glittering fish as they swim around their aquatic home. The day’s temperature is set to climb and be summer-like here in the deep of winter. It seems a wonderful gift after the long march of rainy days and chilly nights. Mother slept better last night with only a few interruptions. She is finding it harder to remember how to eat things and to swallow what she puts in her mouth. So now table conversation deals with bite, chew, swallow, and drink something. She is hungry, but just does not remember how to process the food to get it in her. More things are in liquid form now, as that seems easier for her to deal with. The rides each day provide a highlight and help settle her. The afternoon ride is the most relaxing and she seems to perk up after it.
I have started two new paintings and they are progressing well. I will start another one today. It is a nocturne of moon light on a pond with the shadows of trees meandering across the surface. Blues and whites will be the principal colors as well as purples and oranges. The new paintings are soothing to me and make the days more enjoyable. It is refreshing to see colors sweep across the panel as more designs and patterns emerge, filling the space with movement and depth. I hope to begin another map painting before long. I want to explore the thoughts of new concepts and ideas as they change by enacting with one another, like the changes one makes on a trip as one event leads to another one that was not planned but happens. I have always marveled at how we start out with a plan and how quickly it changes and adapts as we proceed. Maybe that is what comes with age when you see how the plans were only a point of departure and the end was not known by its beginning.
Hope you are finding your days filled with sun and warm light touches your body with the kiss of a coming spring. That you are not mourning the loss of a plan and cannot see what you have and what you discovered. That you can sense the new growth in your heart and mind and smell the wonderful fragrance of new life and joys. That you will share the blooms of rebirth with those around you and in your heart.
