The Smell of Soup
September 2, 2015
The house is filled with the smell of chicken soup as it simmers on the stove. The clouds are slotted and allow the shafts of golden sun to seep through them and hit the bay in amber patches. Mother sits awake now but has been sleeping in her chair. Her night was filled with stirring and finally she could not be convinced to go back to bed so we did our morning ritual and got her washed and dressed and ready for the day. Of course she fell asleep as soon as she settled in her chair but not before mentioning that it sure is dark. With day break a few hours away, I agreed with her. So while she let her coffee turn cold while her eyes closed I began making soup and working on things. In one way it is nice to have things done but would rather have had sleep. Those days of sleeping in will come someday when she has drifted into the arms of our God. Till then we operate at her schedule and enjoy what peace and quiet times in between her waking.
The new paintings of sky and trees are turning out and surprise me with their beauty and magic. The starry sky anchors the clouds on an inky night while trees rise like great monoliths raking the heavens with their branches. The one with the golden metallic background has a very Japanese feeling to it. The reflective gold plays off the indigo sky while diamonds of white, yellow and blue hold the whole in a strong ground. The patterns dance and ring the blimp like clouds as they are held in the painted surface. Have been looking at images I made of the gardens at Shore Acres at night. There are laminations of light sources that flatten the trees from three dimensions to two. The colors shift and there is an unworldly depiction of the garden area. In a way, it is like the lacquer ware set on black backgrounds in import stores. Have not decided how to finish the trees but enjoy thinking of various solutions to play with. The large figure piece is still evolving, growing in sophistication and complexity. The hues still excite and entertain me as they dance with each other and form a great riot of movement. Like a great square dance with everyone in motion and swinging with each other to a joyful tune. Other paintings are doing well and it seems that a lot of work is coming together as though the time is right to reveal themselves.
Hope things are coming together for you and that you see the joy and excitement around you. That you will dance with those who you love and care about. That mercy is something you share each day and are granted grace to live the best you can. That you can appreciate the new songs that you hear and share what songs you have.
