Flashes of Light
June 30, 2015
Sunlightslipsthroughtheclouds and fills the living room with flash bulb brightness then fades as a cloud shuts it eyes. Mother holds her hands so she can bath them in the warm luminosity, taking breaks to drink some coffee as she ponders the world before her. She slept well last night and that gave us both a good rest. This morning she is busy watching birds and boats and whatever else moves on this gentle summer morning. The mild breeze moves the branches and leaves while bees circle and land on flowers for their breakfast. Fishing boats plough through the quiet blue water on their way to the sea. Fishermen, with their small boats, flock into the harbor to try to find some trophy of the deep and a reason to brag. The town is more alive as the lazy days go by. The heat is driving many from their homes inland to feel the cool of the coast and complain how cold it is compared to where they live.
Another day has dawned and again Mother sits looking out, only, unlike yesterday, she did not sleep well and her wakings also impacted my night. It seemed she just could not let go of the thought she had to be somewhere. At 5 AM I gave up and we began our day. The good news is that the house work is done and it is still early in the day. Mother watches the wind move the branches and waits for our ride to begin so she can see things and hopefully spy something that will explain what is going on in her life.
The new large painting has started. The first coat of paint turns a blank white canvas into colorful fields of blues and greens. The new work will have a background of water that is less active than the past few pieces and a figure that is more complex in its symbolism. I want to explore more of the changes in my perception of who I am. To know ones self seems easy on the surface but like everything else, what appears is not always what is there. I am watching the changes in culture and the best description I have heard yet is that culture is people. It is not a creed or code it is just people and how they believe, act and live. That culture changes is not the surprise; it is what new thoughts or ideas were embraced that caused the change. What made what seems static most of the time erupt into something new. Am I changing as well and do not notice it? So many questions I want to explore. I am sure the answers will be both unsettling and there will be many ah ha moments. I also want to see what these changes look like in the imagery of art. As the language of visual components morph into new expressions what will it look like, what will I look like both to me and others. Something else to explore is what awakens a person to change. What is it that causes the person to become aware of the change around them and in them. So much to delve into and what a beautiful pool of ideas to dive in and experience.
Hope you are swimming in the waters of exploration and finding beauty and satisfaction in you. That the parts you find harmful you will throw out of the pool. That you will remove any of the things that keep you from being the best you can be and enjoying life. That you can always find love in your heart for others no matter how difficult that can be at times. That you have the courage to face your fears and not see them as barriers but only things on the road that you can walk around and leave as you journey on.
Take good care and keep smiling and singing as you go.
