Hummingbirds in the Garden
May 19, 2015
Hummingbirds dart and dance from flower to flower while the warm dove grey light makes the vibrant green leaves appear to glow from within. The quiet light can’t hide the firework blasts of color that overflow from the garden. Mother drinks her coffee and follows the course of birds as they work the yard in search of food. Red breasted robins hop and grab while doves coo from the trees and blackbirds and jays jump from one perch to another. Geese add their voices as they fly in formation past the old trees and blend with the sounds of heavy trucks bearing their loads as the work week begins. Mother seems more quiet this morning and keeps a silent watch on her world. She had a few nights of wandering around the house and set off the alarms that sound warning if she gets too close to a door that leads out of the house. What she is searching for is lost to her and she lets me lead her back to her room and comfortable bed. It is easy to see how people with Alzheimer's become at risk even in environments that they are used to. The regression of the mind and skills to take care of ones self just leave like the dropping of the tide only the tide does not come in again. We have been blessed that what is left is a sweet person who reacts with kind and gentle spirit to the changes in her.
I had a chance to work on the large pond painting I have been developing and it is moving toward a conclusion that I am pleased with. Will get to the other works in progress this week as time breaks open from doctor visits and some other events that we are involved with. I am exploring some ideas for the next series of paintings and the rough sketches are revealing a handsome structure to begin the journey to a new place.
Music seeps from the living room as Mother sways gently in her chair feeling the current of sound and lost in her morning reveries. I can tell it is time for us to get out and enjoy the daily drive and see what is going on around the area we live in. For her, it is a time to increase the size of her world and for me a time to share with her.
Hope you will find a way of experiencing the world that you live in and enjoy the sights you see. That you won’t neglect to feed your soul on the beauty that is around you and see the hope in the faces of those you meet. That your words will be gentle, kind and build up others rather than causing pain or problem. And as a friend says, when you make a mess clean it up; your Mother doesn’t work here, so it is up to you.
