Towers of Spring
April 22, 2015
Moundsofpurple, magenta, pink, coral and red fill the windows as the garden bursts with flowers. A nest of golden poppies sit at the feet of towering rhododendrons and azaleas decked out in the vibrant hues of spring. Rosemary waves its branches of purplish blue as heather responds with oranges, yellows and violet. The breeze blowing in the morning sets the garden in motion and creates a pounding surf of shapes and vivid color. Mother’s eyes dart from one cluster of bright flowers to the next. It seems in just a few days the rich greens of spring have been garnished with splendor of joyfully shouting hues that sparkle and send flashes to every part of the yard. Mother sits and tells me I did a good job on the yard. She can’t take it in that she is the one who planted and nurtured the garden into the show place it is now. She has no memory of the years she tended, shaped and designed. She does not understand her plan to bring textures and balance to her plant world, she sees it as simply existing. As a beautiful thing that happens to be and has no part of her in it. Even when I explain the types, and purpose she is lost as to what my words mean. So she is left to enjoy the work of her hands and mind without knowing her role in it, and yet she enjoys the beauty of what is there and smiles as birds and butterflies dart through the hills of color and a snow white cat walks gently by the sculpture of flowers in the early light.
Have been spending time working on the house as spring surges around me. The chores of fixing and repainting and maintaining have locked onto my thoughts and so I try to get them done quickly so that I can get back to more art. Ideas for new work are bubbling up more now and I want to be in the studio painting them into a more solid form. And yet the ravages of winter need to be dealt with before they become problems that require even more time and energy. So I spend some of my days doing yard work and painting on the house and filling holes and all the things that go with owning a home while paintings dance in my mind and heart. Before long the chores will be done and I can relax and not think of things that need to be fixed, then paint will flow through my thoughts and once more images will be brushed into the world.
Hope you are fixing the things in your life that need to be and not fixing the things that don’t need to be done. Also, you are able to enjoy the magic of the spring with its colors and smells that take us to other joyful places and casts a net of peace over us. Trust your heart will hear the singing of birds and your eyes will see the dance of butterflies and it will be a very sweet time for you.
