Of Christmas Lights and Songs in the Air
December 13, 2014
Aswarmofblinkinglights, sparkling angels, shiny snowflakes and other Christmas ornaments hover above Mother as she peers out the window. Her coffee cup close at hand as she takes an occasional drink and then drifts back to thoughts. She likes the lights and yet has no idea what they are for. It is enough that they bring her joy and she comments each morning as though they appeared for the first time that day. We both share the love of bright and shiny. The cards and letters we receive seem like some artifacts from people she does not remember but likes getting them anyway. The carols and hymns make her glad and she loves to sing along even if she seems unaware of why they are being sung.
Time seems to be marching by at a quick clip for me. Cards are going out, events are being attended and I am enjoying saying Merry Christmas to folks I meet. The bridge is completed and ready for the sealer coat to protect it, then off to its new home for Christmas. The pond paintings are going well and seem to capture the balance of tension between nature and man that I am exploring. The small paintings are resolving themselves after what has seemed like forever. I think they are going to work they way I had hoped. New ideas are forming and I am beginning to explore with bits of drawing and notes to myself. The rains have stopped their bombardment and left images and patterns that glisten in the background of my mind. Some will reveal their magic and give food for paintings. Have begun to schedule photography of new works for exhibitions and shipping, created a calendar and the work is not yet finished so am motivated to keep putting brush to canvas. Even in the times I can’t get to paint am thinking of what needs to be done and how to do it.
There is a joy painting in my mind. Sitting gazing out a window with Mother I can move colors and texture, carve channels that the eye follows through the art as the viewer explores the painting. Planning surprises and reviewing the message so it becomes clear and concise. Changing hues to emphasize forms, introducing elements that enhance the objects and letting my mind dance through the whole process. The wonder I feel when it is done and can live with it and see it as a stepping stone to the next art work. The satisfaction to see the works and know how far I have come in the journey fills me with great happiness. Like postcards of a long trip they bring back memories that nourish and lift me up. And that I get to share all of that with others is a fantastic addition to everything else.
Hope you are rejoicing in the brilliant lights, visits with loved ones and friends, with personal peace and a faith that sustains you in all the storms and quiet times. Trust you will allow the hope you have in you to light the way and it will keep you from dark times.
