Darkness Toward the Light
December 1, 2014
The darknessexposesthebrightlightson the crab fleet as ships float on the indigo bay preparing their loads of crab pots for the icy midnight deep. It looks like a slow waltz of huge fireflies moving in deliberate patterns and then making a run up the channel to the open ocean to head to their appointed places. For months the crews have been repairing the large pots for this time. New ropes and floats emblazoned with the colors of their owners have waited stacked for the harvest to come. Now the pots are sitting at the frigid sea calling for crabs to enter and partake of the food inside the cage. On Monday the boats will leave again to haul up the pots and claim the large males while releasing the females to replenish the numbers. From our windows we can see all the activity and also the memorial for those lost at sea. A reminder of the dangers of plying the ocean and seeking its living treasure.
Mother had another night filled with voices calling her to go places and to seek her mother and family. She dozes in her chair oblivious to all the action before her. Her coffee cooling as the Parkinson’s shakes her hand in her shadow sleep. Breakfast is over and now her mind drifts toward some shore of a strange world where she will have encounters only she is able to see. The activity of Thanksgiving is receding and the left overs from the feast are slowing disappearing from the refrigerator. The joy of loved ones sharing in celebration of thankfullness was so sweet and uplifting. Such events remind me of how fortunate I am to be loved and able to share my life with others.
The light is beginning to come into the sky and more cars make their serpentine passage to the docks and prepare for their days work. Have started three new pond paintings and now the first few coats of paint cover the brilliant white of panels. Am excited to explore the depths of the pond and discover what draws me into its murky water. The bridge is almost totally done. Last few details were added and now it sits with its face to the wall for a week. Then it will be turned around and evaluated to see if it feels done to me. When it does, it will dry for a week or so before the protective coat of clear is applied to its surface and then it is ready to deliver and to live with its new family. Am getting the studio ready for a visit to see the work I have been doing. Then pictures will be taken and the galleries will contact possible buyers and months of work will populate the walls for a short time then new works will take their places as paintings finish and are shown. Will be working on framing work for shows and getting them dressed up for their debut. Some will go to clients, others to galleries and museums or wherever there is a place to exhibit.
Mother is beginning to stir and peer at the world. Soon she will be ready to leave the warm chair and take a journey by car to see the new day. She smiles at me across the room and I see the uncertainty of not knowing who I am or where she is. After I speak she registers relief and relaxes knowing she is in the place she should be.
Hope you will always know that you are where you should be and feel safe there. That the joy of life and dwelling of love will be your companions and the robe of peace will always be upon you.
