Warm Rain in the Morning
November 26, 2014
Theraindrumsaconstantbeaton the roofas we gaze out into the early morning light. Mother sips her coffee and holds on to the cup getting the warmth into her hands. She would rather have a warm cup than her gloves on, even though the room is warm. I think tropical heat would be her desired choice for room temperature at this stage of her life. As we watch the snow fall in other parts of the nation, I am very glad that we have escaped the bitter cold. I’m not sure we could afford the heating bill to keep things as warm as we do here.
The deep green has returned to the garden as the dry season passes and the wet winter begins. I wish most of the green was not weeds but am afraid that it is. Better to drink hot tea and coffee than be outside with hoe in hand making things neat. Thanksgiving is next week and cards are coming in and baking continues to fill the house with smells of cake and harvest time cooking. The fragrance transports me to years back and reveals scenes of friends, homes and different locations from travels far and wide. I began a new work about what we hold inside and what we choose to reveal. A figure sits below the surface of a pond that reveals and hides at the same time. I’m working with it for a show this spring. Am excited as I explore and watch the beauty unfold and where it will lead me. The bridge keeps on getting better as details begin to impact each other and the hues sing more joyfully. Have learned so much and am enthused by the way it has emerged. It has gone beyond an architecture and rendering of a form to something that is more and that floods me with triumphant feelings. The victory is in seeing what is in my mind made into something that others can see and live with and share to others they introduce the work to.
The small paintings are being temperamental of late. The forms and shapes are moving along but seem to be most independent and won’t be rushed. Like cats they will move when they want to; not when I want them to. That is good, too. It is better to think through a process than try to force an outcome. To pare back the layers and see the essence of thought rather than the surface of it. Things and ideas need time, light and air to show what they really are. Speed can kill. It can take something beautiful and hide it from the viewer. Like a landscape seen from a car going down the freeway. You only get a taste of it, never get to enjoy the depth, power or what it truly is. Like television, it lets you see things but not experience them. The more you know about the people and world around you the more you know about yourself.
Hope you have memories that are triggered by the smells and sounds of this time of year and that they are sweet and nourishing to you as the cold days come; and if you don’t, that you will make some. They do keep us warm in frosty days we live in.
