Smellsof bakingcakesswirlaroundthehouseas visions of happy times sharing with friends pass through my thoughts. Mother smiles as she looks out the window and it seems the world is in a sweet place. The flags of retreat fly from the branches of trees in yellow, oranges and reds. The nights are colder now and the heater is on until late morning to break the chill of autumn’s icy side.
A brush with colds has left us craving warmth and the comfort of hot tea and coffee. So many were hit hard with the sneezing, coughs and fever which we escaped. Fear is always present when illness is in the air not only for the discomfort for Mother but also that it might trigger a decline and complication of the Alzheimers. We keep up our shots to prevent all we can and try to eat healthy and take medications and yet always is the lurking fear that our defense will be undone. This morning the fear is lifted and we rejoice in beauty we see and the cake we will soon taste.
The small paintings of the forest floor continue their journey to completion and the bridge is now in the final detail stage. When corrections are made, lines straitened and last minute changes are made. A joy of finishing is balanced with the journey ended and leaving it behind to journey with another work. Am very pleased with the way it has developed and how the hues cooperate with each other to enhance the painting. The work is a blend of those who have commissioned it and myself. Most art is done alone with only my thoughts to guide me. Working with others makes it enjoyable and makes the bridge of communication clearer to both the maker and the viewer who will live with it.
The new year approaches and so do new exhibitions to prepare for as well as to have work to go to galleries, museums and other art venues. There is an electric feel as works go to be shared with people in far off cities and towns where my work is unknown. Sometimes messages of how a work touched a viewer come my way, other times I have to trust that the art message will get to viewers who, even if they don’t contact me, are impacted by the paintings. Local shows are great in that there is more of a chance to talk to the viewers and hear of their experiences with the images. Have been most fortunate that institutions have purchased paintings for their collections and so my work can be seen over the years.
To be able to revisit the art over the course of time and change of the individual is special. We change and how and what we see in art changes, too. More than once the remark that “I never saw that before” is heard. Art is an unfolding experience that changes as we dialog and process what we see and think. The filters we have in place try to categorize what the image says to us while the art challenges our filters and categorizations to open our minds to more not less. To think big thoughts and experience a different way of seeing the world around us. When we think for ourselves we leave the herd and the safety that implies and we gain trust in ourselves and our own judgements. We are able to evaluate what the object means to us, to be comfortable in our own skins and with our own thoughts.
Hope you are comfortable as you see new things, hear new music, taste new food, go to new places and are strong enough in yourself not to fear to like or dislike things that others do.
