Fragments of Memory

Crystalrobinseggbluelaughsfrom from the dome of the sky as the ball of yellow climbs over the tree line across the bay. The icy fingers of winter touch the morning, then retreat as the sun radiates its good cheer and warm breath on the land. Mother basks in the joyful feelings of hot light on her hands and listens to music as she watches birds dance over the blue water. Sleep came well last night and only a few interruptions filled her night. This morning she was in a fog of forgetfulness and did not know where or what she was suppose to do. It takes longer now for her to focus and relax, to process what I tell and reassure her that she is in a place of love and safety. Her mind is full of the pieces of a life she cannot put together and I try to glue what I can so she will dwell in peace. The jagged shards do not fit well so I try to cement them in a pleasing pattern that she can enjoy and live with. Soon she will want to explore the location of where she is. Some she says she remembers, others are just the narrative that she creates to make it through the day.
Art is moving in a serpentine manner with many changes and new paths that pop up often. It is exciting to make choices and see where they lead me. Am working on three small works that explore the encrusted surface of the forest floor. A world of color and shape and complexity. What is underfoot takes on a special life when examined carefully and suggests all sorts of patterns and rhythms that translate into inspiration for new art. To see in intimate scale where the viewer must come close and to explore the work adds an intensity to the observation. The distance of the viewer to the art creates it own tension. Large works let the viewer retreat away from physical contact with the art to be remote.
There is always a feeling of detachment when we remove ourselves from closeness and a fear when we have to approach as though our ability to retreat is threatened. Just like the person who invades our personal space, we are compelled to deal with the intrusion of the message when it is closer than we are comfortable with. Not all information in a work is pleasant to encounter. Like life, there are parts we want to avoid and not think about. In tight spaces we have fewer places to ignore and bump into the prickly pieces more often.
The bridge painting continues to wind up. The last few paint sessions have been filled with rapid resolutions. Areas seem to come to life almost by their own energy. Hues are joyfully intermingling with each other and the patterns form their own sentences of meaning. The time of completion is both happy and sad. The journey has had ups downs, changes and breakthroughs, disappointments and in the end it helped me grow and see more clearly. It also says what I hoped it would say, that the bridge is more than a form or function it has a meaning that flows through it. That it was made to be beautiful and elegant and to join together with the water, hills and sky to be one.
Hope you add to where you are and make all that is around you better. To give more than you receive and help more than you are helped. Keep strong in your faith and hope.
