Time Well Spent
October 3, 2014
Afloodofstartlingblindinglight chases Mother in the living room from one island of shade to another making her coffee time more active than usual. The delight of vibrant robins egg blue fills the sky as lemon yellow forms at the tips of branches and gilds bushes in the yard. Sienna and ochre have entered the palette of once verdant growth and given the garden a sense of dusty tiredness, which has not stopped hopping birds as they seek a breakfast among the mounds of flora. The chill of night is being replaced quickly as radiant heat is packed in through large windows with faces set to the eastern horizon. Mother’s dilemma increases as she finds the shade too cool and the sun too warm and changes clothes in a fruitless search for the just right spot. Soon we will venture forth on our ride and all will be monitored by the automobile’s computer and the artificial equilibrium will provide her with the perfect balance to see the world in.
Her Zen state in which only the moment exists is always suppressing. Neither a past nor a future, the now is all she has and in that the confusion of life is confronted and dealt with through the filters of her mind. She is further hindered by the lack of words to explain to me what she needs, wants or sees. So, observation replaces conversation, and her smile an anchor line for us both. The setting forth can not be put off any longer and we shall board our flying carpet and go explore what is out there beyond our domicile. Back from sparkling waves and golden beach, from watching children run and scream in front of observant parents in fashionable attire, Mother sits with a cup of hot java and searches the vista for something to explore.
Have been getting some work done on the bridge painting in a strange meandering way. Tried several metallic pigments to enhance the sun washed surface of the structure while sticking to traditional paint in other areas of the work. Want the feel of an encrusted, man-made face of valuable materials that evokes the worth of the bridge and for what it does more than what it is. Am trying to tell several narratives at one time and trying to keep it from being jumbled or cluttered. So many ways of travel are present in the composition. Water, air, roadway trails and others all write their own witness account of why, who, how, etc. Have to formulate a blend that enhances each of them without a visual brawl erupting. When that is done, will have an image that depicts scene in fresh joyful and exciting manner, and then it will be finished. That is still a ways off and each day brings me closer to fulfillment.
Began a sketch for a seascape. Just an impression of water and light quietly conversing with each other. Have a gray cobalt blue stuck in my head as it plays off a beach of warm goldfish orange.
Most of the last few days have been getting work photographed and materials sent out for exhibitions. Sometimes it seems that so much energy is expended on the showing, but if you can’t get it to the viewer they can’t see the work. Have been fortunate that the work has found venues to travel to and people willing to spend time looking at it. It is a special gift when someone takes the time to listen to what we say.
Hope I will always make that time well spent. Trust where ever you are at that the day will be warm and sunny and filled with optimism and you will live it to the fullest.
