SpottedSerpents are not my first thought as I greet the day, and yet they have been popping up in my mind the last few days. I did a series of serpent paintings when I was exploring the theme of seduction in its action of capturing the person and I was intrigued with how beauty can cause a person to forget danger and the risk they are taking. The dark edge of attraction is that something can be beautiful and deadly. It also can be corrosive, eating away while not being obvious. This new work deals with the jumping off point of “wise as a serpent but harmless as a dove”. Have been thinking about what is the wisdom of serpents. A number of garden snakes have been making appearances around the yard of late. Not sure what constitutes an act of serpent wisdom and do notice some characteristics that appear to be wise adaptations. The patterns that they bear on their bodies blend in with their surroundings and the markings are very beautiful when you can get them to hold still long enough to see them. To really observe them, you have to remove them from their environment and look closely.
When I did the tree paintings, I explored the idea of what trees would look like if they got tattoos like people do. It was interesting to wonder what marks would trees put on themselves to celebrate or remember a event. With the new serpent ideas, I am wondering what would a snake celebrate and want to remember? What pattern would they place on their bodies and what would the use be; number of kills like aircraft fighter planes bear, or life events such as the birth of children, or some mystic symbol to give them added powers and abilities. Not sure where I am going to take this.
Have started two panels with gold backgrounds and coiled snakes, just to see where the journey takes me. The flowers and green leaf images continue to get more resolved each day. The crush of of the images seems to be giving rise to a pattern within a pattern.
In odd minutes when I can, I like to go in and just stare at them for a while. At least working in the house instead of the studio gives me more of a chance to think about them and see what is going on. The new bridge painting plans are going well. Finished a few small sketches that are instructive and am playing with the design, too. Getting some pieces started for shows coming up in the fall. Not sure what to do yet but am thinking (or what ever it is I do).
Days here are filled with sun and hope, trust they are with you, too.
